Disturbing details from yesterday’s tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 continue to pour in. Some 298 souls lost on the Boeing 777, the most in a single airline crash or incident since 9/11. The second airplane lost for Malaysia’s flagship carrier in the past four months.
But perhaps most disturbing of all is the unfolding narrative of who — and what — was likely at fault:
An advanced surface to air missile …
Fired by separatist rebels in Ukraine …
Supplied directly or indirectly by Russian President Vladimir Putin, or stolen from Ukraine by rebels he has backed.
The response from Ukraine has been swift and strident. Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenuk used some of the most inflammatory language I’ve seen yet, saying:
“This is a crime against humanity … All red lines have been already crossed … We ask our international partners to call an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting and to [do] everything we can to stop this war: a war against Ukraine, a war against Europe, and after these terrorists shot down a Malaysian aircraft, this is a war against the world.”
He added: “Everyone is to be accountable and responsible. I mean everyone who supports these terrorists, including Russians and the Russian regime.”
On the flip side, Putin has strongly denied Russia was responsible in any way. He put the blame solely on Ukraine by saying:
“This tragedy would not have happened if there were peace on this land, if the military actions had not been renewed in south-east Ukraine. And, certainly, the state over whose territory this occurred bears responsibility for this awful tragedy.”
“We do know it puts the ongoing, simmering conflict in Ukraine squarely in front of the eyes of the world again.” |
Whether the missile strike was deliberately launched against a civilian jetliner … an attack aimed at the Ukrainian military that went horribly wrong … or something else entirely, we don’t know yet for certain. But we do know it puts the ongoing, simmering conflict in Ukraine squarely in front of the eyes of the world again.
At the same time, Israel has launched a full-scale ground invasion in Gaza. The assault is designed to halt rocket attacks and incursions from attackers using tunnels under the Israeli border.
More than 250 Palestinians have already died in the conflict over the past 11 days, compared with only a handful of Israelis that have either died or been injured. But now that ground troops are moving in, the potential for a sharp rise in casualties on both sides will increase. And the sad truth is, these kinds of conflicts in the region have been going on for several decades — with multiple peace plans collapsing over the years.
The human toll of the rise in global violence is unmistakably large. The question before us here, though, is what does it mean for investment markets and you?
Hamas has once again come into direct conflict with Israeli troops, another factor helping to increase global tensions. |
First, every market on the planet has been incredibly placid so far this year. Volatility in currencies, commodities, bonds, and stocks has fallen to record lows, or close to it — a side effect of all the easy money central bankers have thrown at the markets.
But I’ve been saying I doubted that could last much longer, and rising geopolitical tensions are a clear potential trigger for a change in trend. That means the risk of owning fundamentally weak stocks or bubbly, junky bonds is going up.
Second, if Putin digs in his heels and throws more support behind the rebel movement in the Ukraine despite this air disaster, the response from the U.S. and Europeans will get even harsher. We already saw President Obama announce new sanctions aimed at Russian businesses, individuals, and capital markets. Who knows how far Washington and Brussels will go if Putin pushes harder?
One reason why Putin might stick with his current stance is that he faces no pressure at home to back off. A whopping 83 percent of Russians approve of the job he’s doing, according to a new Gallup poll. That ties the highest approval rating Putin has ever seen, recorded in 2008.
Third, we’ve already seen the energy and gold markets perk up thanks to the increase in inflation and economic growth in parts of the globe. If you layer rising geopolitical instability of the kind Larry Edelson has been discussing on top of that, you have a recipe for much bigger gains in both markets.
So all else being equal, this could be a good time to dial down some risk in your equity holdings. It also makes sense to increase your exposure to energy and gold investments, given the trends impacting both of those markets.
Where do you come down on these latest events? Now, do we need to get more aggressive when it comes to attempting to contain Putin’s ambitions? Or will that just make a bad problem worse? Do you think geopolitical tensions are going to get better from here, or could we be on the verge of even larger conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and elsewhere?
Finally, what will you do in response with your investments? Let me know at the Money and Markets comments section.
OUR READERS SPEAK |
Some comments and opinions are already pouring in, of course, given the Malaysia air tragedy. It appears that you have widely divergent opinions on what, if anything, we should do — and what Putin will do next.
Reader Mike S. said: “Anybody that thinks the Russians are our ‘best friends’ or ought to ‘be trusted’ have their heads in ‘dark places’. The screw up that we made after bankrupting them with Star Wars was to allow our oil companies to go in there and modernize their antiquated oil and gas extraction facilities, then encouraging the Europeans to buy gas from them.
“That new funding has only allowed them to have a weapon to use against the Europeans and the funds to modernize their military and return to the Cold War. When will we ever learn?”
Reader William F. said that he spent more than two years in Ukraine over the past decade, and offered the following insight: “The majority of the people in this area of Ukraine are more pro-Russian than you can imagine as most of them are former or current Russians themselves. They are frustrated with the lack of real representation for many years of their needs and wants, which Kiev has consistently never delivered, only broken promises over and over again.
“I do not foresee a peaceful resolution in this situation until Russia either 1) Is allowed to annex the Donetsk and Lugansk regions or 2) Russia takes these two regions via the current pro-Russian forces and/or a land invasion by Russian troops or 3) Ukraine wipes out all of the pro-Russians which is not realistically possible.”
Finally, he added: “God help us (the USA) from any more direct involvement in the likely event this escalates further from here INCLUDING supplying arms to Ukraine. Putin is not one to mess with and from today we can see the real effects (and ramifications) of our imperialistic ways and actions (sanctions) unfold as Putin said/predicted himself.”
Reader John T. also cautioned against getting swept up in the conflict, saying: “I don’t think the U.S. government has any business in the Ukraine and Russia. It looks like to me that President Obama sees himself as the world’s disciplinarian. He wants to dictate his beliefs to everyone or face punishment.
“Putting stiff sanctions on any country can lead to war! That’s what Franklin Roosevelt did to Japan, provoking Japan to attack Pearl Harbor. That brought us in to World War II.”
If you would like to add your input to the discussion, please don’t hesitate to go to the Money and Markets comment section and do so. These are tense times, and the potential ramifications for all of us — as investors, Americans, or citizens of other countries — are large. So hopefully we can all gain from each other’s expertise and opinions.
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS OF THE DAY |
The AbbVie (ABBV, Weiss Ratings: B) deal for Shire  (SHPG, Weiss Ratings: B-) is now official. Abbvie will pay about $54.8 billion to buy Shire and shift its tax jurisdiction overseas, potentially slashing its tax rate to 13 percent by 2016 from 22 percent now. It’s the biggest “tax inversion” transaction to date, but certainly won’t be the last unless tax policy changes!
General Electric (GE, Weiss Ratings: B+) is seeking to tap an eager initial public offering market. The company wants to sell its credit card unit, Synchrony Financial, to the public in a deal that could raise as much as $3.25 billion. The unit provides private label cards — cards financed by GE but bearing the names of retailers or other third-party firms on the front.
Google (GOOGL, Weiss Ratings: B+) wasamong the many “brand name” stocks reporting earnings in the past 24 hours. The Internet advertising and search firm reported a 22 percent surge in sales, topping estimates with revenue of $15.96 billion. Earnings came in a bit light, but investors nevertheless cheered the results.
But chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD, Weiss Ratings: D+) Â got hit hard after reporting weaker-than-expected earnings. The company faces stiff competition from powerhouse Intel (INTC, Weiss Ratings: A-).
Not much on the economic front to report, and investors are much more focused on geopolitics here anyway. But a confidence index from Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan slumped to 81.3 in July from 82.5 in June.
Reminder: You can let me know what you think by putting your comments here.
Until next time,
Mike Larson

Firstly I fault the Malaysian airlines for flying that deadly route. They should know better! Next I think we should back off completely from the Russian/Ukranian situation. Yes, Americans died but it is not a fight we need to get into.
Lastly, I think we need to get out of the whole mid-east and Africa area and concentrate on our serious problems at home. There is no solution for problems that have plagued the area for almost 2,000 years. Again, not our fight.
We have very serious problems at home with a porous border, record numbers of Americans behind prison bars, a president who scoffs at our laws and courts and a militarized police force who are terrorizing innocent citizens. We need to take care of our own millions of citizens who are underemployed/unemployed and encourage entrepreneurial activity by eliminating taxes on each level of production and installing a flat tax system. America has lost its way and we need to get that “can do” spirit back.
come off it,FBL,Blaming the airline, the Germans use the same route,so its your fault if you wonder into a black area and get shot,Remind me to say,he should not have been there,or even driving your car someone hits you ,YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE THERE!
Yes, WHY was MA17 flying north of the flight path of the last 10 MA17 flights? The path diverged from the previous paths when it was midway over Ukraine. Who instructed it to to do? Was this its original intended path or did it change as a result of instructions from Kiev air control? Were these passengers sacrificed in a set-up after eastern Ukrainian rebels downed three Ukrainian war planes? Why haven’t the media delved into these questions? Perhaps we’ll get answers after the next war.
Hello Everyone: It seems to me that the advice provided by Safe Money Report would lead any “knowledgable & thinking” investor to conclude that a period of Bad News is about to unfold. How many companies still rely upon tightening their operating budgets with large layoffs (of even skilled employees) or inventory cuts to fatten their reported profits? Microsoft just announced an 18,000 employee layoff and that’s Microsoft which is considered to be a “safe” “dividend paying” “billion-dollar” “blue-chip” company! What about all the companies that are not “billion-dollar” entities, some of which act as suppliers and rely upon the “blue-chips.” The economy seems to be a house of cards that’s about to cave in because too many layers of cards (tricks, slights of hand, and kicking the can down the road) have been added with no foundation cards (the economic basics) to support the additional weight.
Then of course, there is the absolute mess that is the federal government thanks to the politicians both Republican and Democrat that staff the legislative branch (both houses of the congress) as well as those that staff the executive branch and those that staff the judicial branch. Far too many politicians are protecting themselves by voting increasing benefits for themselves or protecting special interests rather than protecting the citizens of the United States.
We can only rely upon ourselves and (some of) our allies for support and I do not include Russia. Putin is the same as he has always been and we have been stupid to believe that he had made any changes that benefit any nation other than Russia. We have made many errors in our approach and support to the nations of the world. We have squandered our treasure in pursuit of policing the world or instilling our “democratic ideals” upon the other nations of the world but we can no longer continue to do so.
I do not have any answers but I hope someone does. It will take persons who place the interests of the citizens of the United States above themselves and their own interests.
This hasn’t happened to the extent it should have to date but possibly it can in the future. I hope so.
Its in Gods Hands now
The press portrays Russia as a lone wolf . However , I have not yet come upon a careful and thorough analysis of Russia`s allies from a geopolitical and an economic point of view and how willing they would be to rally behind Russia should conflict with west deepen .
I suspect that further polarization of Russia`s allies and the West will indeed bring important changes in currency , commodities and investment markets .
It amazes me that our elected officials and the news media (and a lot of our general population) rant over the Russians supplying the Ukranian rebels with arms. It seems that this is terrible in their eyes, but when we (the US) have done the same around the world for years (S. Korea, Egypt, Syria, Irac, Iran, Pakistan, Afganistan, Lybia and the list goes on and on) they think it’s OK. Putin is doing no different than Lincoln did during the American Civil War, He is trying to reunite his country, the Soviet Union. It is time that we (the US) stop trying to impose our will on the rest of the world and telling the people of other countries what kind of government they should have. It is none of our business. We need to bring our troops home, secure our borders and tell the rest of the world that we will no longer interfer in their countries (and finance their conflicts) OR tolerate them interfering in ours.
I agree Al H. If we want war we can definitely find it and if we go on thinking we are always right and everyone else is wrong we are likely to find war. The US is far from innocent in these matters.
Everyone around the world is touchy always willing to blame others on the tough times and just to let off some steam about our own bad situation we don’t seem to be able to deal with. In fact we brought our debt problems onto ourselves with too much lending and no insight into the magnitude of it all. Now we are the leaders in printing money to save a problem of too much debt. The fact is our country needs to slow down as I no doubt think it will when all the falsehood starts to collapse.
We can find plenty of enemies, like Putin, if desired but we would be much smarter to study ourselves and find ways of living within our means and staying peaceful.
O.K. boys and girls let’s see how smart you all are. There has never been a treaty that Russia has signed with the U.S. that she has kept. Any questions?
Hi Rich,Im one of the boys,Does anybody keep their word these days,Honour and truth are out the windows these days. How many treaties have been broken with the American Indians,The attitude seems to be, keep till it goes against you, then lets forget it.
Uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but it appears “John T” is trying to make the Ukraine situation a partisan issue. If any of these events had occurred during the Bush/Cheney regime, U.S. ground troops would already be on Ukrainian soil. Am I the only one who remembers the “weapons of mass destruction” that supposedly justified the dispatch of U.S. personnel to Iraq? (By the way, how much did Halliburton and Cheney profit from that little jubilee–in which, the U.S. spent $800 BILLION in Iraq alone?) I’m not a huge Obama fan, but I’m a little tired of seeing the right-wingers and tea-partiers blame him for literally everything wrong in the world. Why does “W” and his band of crooks and idiots get a free ticket in screwing up the planet? If those clowns had any brains or integrity, we would have commenced building a parking lot stretching from Jerusalem to the Indian border, with the purpose of finding bin Ladin after 9/11. Once he was apprehended, all U.S. troops would have been on their way home within 72 hours.
I agree with John T comments
The US helped get this all started by helping over throw the government in that country in the first place. We had no business there, but as usual we just had to try and impose our will on them. Now it is completely out of control, and may lead to World war three.
The sad and scary part of the scenario is that the US is being led by a neophyte that thinks he was born to be king of the world. He is far over his head in dealing with Putin, a skilled military and political leader with his people behind him. Putin foresees Russia regaining the power and prestige of the former USSR, and with our present leader(s) he may be able to do it. Obama has become the perfect political animal, able to cater to the masses and blame everything on someone else. I fear that he is very capable of starting a war on either American or foreign soil and using it as an “emergency” that would allow him to declare the 2014 election to be delayed or cancelled completely. Foreigners have a better understanding of his ambitions than Americans. They still remember Hitler.
We indeed live in VERY interesting times. All this geo-political maneuvering is simply the result of Global Elites jockeying for position. Unfortunately the poor and the lower/middle/upper middle class are and will pay the price. Right now, it is looking more clear by the day that this is a push and tug between the Western Elites (Europe/USA/Canada/Australia/Japan etc.) versus the Eastern Elites (Russia/China/India/Brazil/South Africa etc) If all the covert/clandestine/black ops actions continue as they are between these two elephants, This is an ABSOLUTELY a NO WIN situation for the world’s middle class going forward.
It is always interesting to me how almost every report seems to focus on how many have died in the Gaza strip because of Israeli bombing without mentioning the 8000 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Sderot and other southern Israelii cities and towns over the years, or that millions of Israelis live in constant fear of a rocket coming at any moment with only 15-30 seconds warning to get into one of the many bomb shelters they have had to build because of years of rocket bombardment. from Gaza. The bomb shelters is why so few Israelis have been killed. As Israel’s prime minister has often said, any nation has the right to defend itself. What would America do if thousands of rockets were being fired from Mexico into US cities?
Herr are some questions for you.
Someone must have made those Ground to Air missiles
Someone must have supplied the missiles.
They are not cheap.
Where did these brain dead lunatics get that sort of money?
What kind of person would give these lunatics these kinds of weapons?
Obviously the recipients of this equipment are either brain washed or just insane as it is quite obvious from their comments about the disaster. In fact they don’t even register it as a humanity disaster. Like it’s “their fault” for flying over “our” country. How insane a statement it that? The glory of sacrifice for the cause, whatever that means, and similar insane comments.
I am sure many people right now feel all they want to do now is blow these clowns off the face of the earth and give the rest of the decent souls here some peace. While this may satisfy the feelings of revenge a better action would be to get hold of the truly evil individuals making and suppling this kind of weaponry to nut cases and putting that lot in jail. I mean where did they get that stuff. One thing is for sure they never made it themselves as that is way beyond their ability and intelligence. Nutters should be put in nut houses, that’s where they belong. Would you give your 10 year old an AK47?
Am I the only one who gets confused when I hear the word “Rebels” in the Ukraine mess. Didn’t the current Kiev Government just take power by an armed Coup, overthrowing a democratically elected regime? A Russian friend of mine said that in the Ukraine, “A lot of people are walking around with machine guns, kinda like a 21st Century version your own ‘Wild West'”.
My impression is that this is more like a gang war, and we should not be getting in bed with either side. I think this is another case where we should be minding our own business.
Make no mistake about it–the real issue here is Putin’s lust for power and he’s not going to give up what control he has over all those pipelines running through Ukraine. But it’s not just Putin that’s behind this. I read somewhere that Putin went from making about $50,000 a year as a KGB agent to amassing sixty billion dollars in wealth. When I think of the Russian leadership, I think of the mafia. Putin’s not really the godfather. We’ll never know who that is, but you can bet that the bosses that control the wealth that comes from those pipelines are the ones who have made him wealthy.
This is not really a pro-Russian verses Ukrainian issue. That is just fuel used for the fire. This is only what Putin is using to justify his actions.
And as for the sanctions, they have and will only continue to unite the Russian Nationalists even more. Look at Putin’s approval rating. I read that it was a whopping 80%. What other leaders of nations have we heard of that had an approval rating like that? Sanctions do not always produce the desired results–especially when they only serve to unite the people being sanctioned. I believe we have only strengthened Putin’s hand.
And I know this will upset some people, but the United Nations is a joke. It has always been and will always be a joke. The idea of a United Nations is a good one. But has it or can it ever work? Maybe to some degree, but I don’t want my nation giving up it’s sovereignty to the dictates of the United Nations. Every time I hear someone bring up the United Nations I cringe. Do the people of the world really believe that because the United Nations makes some decree that a nation such as Russia or China or Korea or even the United States is going to change their behavior. The United Nations is like the little dog that runs behind you, yaps and acts tough until you turn around and lunge toward him. Then he runs cowardly away (while still yapping of course). The United Nations is good at wagging the tongue but not much else.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. I hope I haven’t ruffled too many feathers.
.Best for each country/region to solve its own internal affairs.Offer to assist but don’t get involved besides the US has its own problems to deal with unemployment, homeless etc. .Iraq, Libya the problems still linger in fact its got worse.Afghanistan not solved. Not possible to act as global policeman.Partnership, not domination, should be the mantra of the future
Neither is it possible for one nation to control the whole world, economically. Its grown too big for that.
Most Americans are not aware of Hitler’s history before he began imprisoning and killing Jews. As I understand it, Hitler was taking back small countries and areas he considered Germany. I see an alarming similarity to Putin and Russia today. This is how Europe became involved in the war and it bears a good warning for all Western nations to be aware. I think Mr. Putin should be handled before this does turn into WWIII. I lived through the cold war. Putin alone has put us there again. Its bulls**t! If those citizens living in areas other than Russia want to be Russians – let em pack their bags and go to Russia. Audios!
Hi, Patrons Of Money And Markets Et Al:
Despite the allegations towards Mr. Putin of Russia and his attachment to working with the insurgents who supposedly did the dirty deed of shooting down the civilian jetliner etc., Mr. Larson, if you were on a plane headed in the direction of the insurgents wouldn’t you want the airline to divert the path of the plane around them which is only common sense in this day and age isn’t it? Would you drive your car right into the heart of a huge forest fire; knowing that doing so would be risky enough to you to cause your death or would you abstain from that path until you know the path is clear of risk? How dumb can one get anyway?
If I were in the Arabs shoes I would appeal to China, by telling them that our oil supply deal was off; until they took care of Israel even though knowing the Arabs need the continuing income and China needs the continuation of Arabian oil daily. The Chinese would have the air power to convince Israel finally that they are not God’s chosen people upon whose side God sides towards winning every one of their crazy wars. That cycle one way or the other eventually must be broken, to convince the pride of Israel that they are just like the rest of humanity in need of real peace. It’s only a matter of time that Israel as the Bible convinced me will be surrounded with armies; armies that con convince Israel to drop its’ superiority complex and learn to live in peace in this world. Instead of sending John Kerry there to supposedly try to talk peace with both sides; both sides need to learn the eternal common denominator lesson which is “do to others as you would have them do to you!” No other so called diplomacy will actually acquire the spirit of truth in this regard within this region of OUR world…….period! The US needs to learn this lesson as well as Russia, China, Europe, England and etc. don’t you agree Mr. Larson?

Hi all
Rather than isolating Russia as some have suggested, this might be the time to talk to them, directly. Engage them in what is the common global good and why the issues in the Ukraine errupted in the first place. The hand of peace and friendship has not been tested fully yet. Remember the first casuality of war is the truth. Someone, many of us remember advised once, to proceed carefully while carrying a big stick, this may help us all.
sir; have read your N/L since don’t know when and will continue to do so..
But have to strongly disagree on this ukraine disaster..
We are definitely reading from different pages.
From the end of WW1,when the USA took over the burden of POWER from the bankrupt british empire,it has been a constant in your face agression against real or perceived enemies,[[or roadblocks] to control..
I do not judge the intent, but when a lie and human slaughter is your best friend, you are the enemy of GOD OF ABRAHAM ISSIAC AND JACOB..

It’s hard to forget the sustained blitz of pressure that Mike Larson mounted to get us to subscribe more than $4,000 to his Interest Rate Speculator, all of whose predictions have failed – just as those of Larry Edelson have proven incorrect. And, now, all of a sudden, Mike is an expert on the equity markets. One could cry, given the absurdity of it all. It’s not even as though Mike is remotely ready to accept the truth. Much as I loathe sinister and drunken Russia, one has to admit that the downing of the Malaysian passenger plane is the fault of America, not Russia. America, whose foreign policy under its appallingly weak president has been a joke for several years (making serious mistakes in every corner of the globe), simply cannot understand that Russia is not ready to see the Ukraine as yet a further site for the American missile systems that already surround her. That’s why she supports the pro-Russian separatists in the East of the country. Putin is far smarter than Obama and far more vicious. He can live with Obama’s sanctions, which will redound to America’s detriment. Finally (just in case Mike gets THIS wrong, too), Israel’s necessary incursion into Gaza (which will unfortunately soon be abrupted by virtue of global concern for the plight of “innocent” civilians, who are so innocent that they scream with frenzied pleasure whenever they hear of an Israeli who has been killed or wounded) will not lead to ANY expansion of the hostilities in the Middle East. Mike clearly knows too little about the Middle East to realize that it is more fragmented today than ever before. Sunnis are trying to massacre Shia and Kurds in Iraq, Shia from Lebanon’s Hizbollah are fighting to aid Assad’s Alawites in Syria, Libya is a totally splintered mess, Saudi Arabia feels bitterly betrayed by America over America’s ionsane attempts to make friends with the lunatic Iranians, and Egypt and Jordan have become practically military allies of Israel. THere is no longer an unified coalition of Arab or Muslim states. Consequently, the likelihood of any danger to equity investments, in any sane country, resulting from Israel’s timely thrashing of Hamas is effectively nil. Money and Markets specializes in issuing lurid and hysterical news and forecasts (gold is described as “skyrocketing” when it “soars” by as little as 1% in price). It has been doing this for many years. It has been doing it for so long that I’m surprised if ANYBODY still pays much credence to what you publish. Your only chance (and you probably know it) is to rope in NEW readers who are unaware that all of your investment advice, over the past seven years, has been grossly incorrect and has fallen flat on its face. This being the case, I’m afraid that Bernard Baruch, were he alive, would probably be tempted to deny that he ever had more than a mere nodding acquiaintance with Irwin Weiss. Sorry. But that’s my view.

Putin was flying home from his South American tour on a simiiar route within a half hour time frame. This was likely a Nato assassination attempt gone wrong by case of mistaken identity. Check this out.

Mikey,
How receptive do you think Putin will be to your President if he thinks they are trying to kill him? Putin extended loans to Ukraine on favourable terms when others would not. He sold Ukraine gas at a discount to what the EU pays. When the eastern regions voted to separate your country denied the legitimacy of the vote and gave material aid to Keiv to kill them. Putin declined the opportunity to annex the territory like Crimea. Putin has asked both sides to come to the negotiating table which your country does not support. Obama was on the phone with Putin as the airliner was hit. It is like Obama is sadistic enough to want to hear the explosion is real time. Putin wants to eliminate use of the dollar in BRIC transactions and create a BRIC competitor to the IMF. Putin is a devout Orthodox Christian putting Bibles in schools. Obama is a Satan worshiping Freemason wanting to take them out of schools. It makes for a compelling reason for assassination. Check out the Russian view of things.

Obama is absolutely more than worthless, especially when it comes to Putin. All he can think about is fund raisers and spending huge sums of money on worthless pet projects. This world is going to get a lot worse. I an 84 and have no idea what to do, so for know I am following Larry.
Every Politician and Pundit that mongers for WAR must serve in the Front Lines. We have too many WAR PROFITEERS who have created the messes we are faced with because they PROFIT while other People BLEED. Where are the Romney, Clinton, Cheney, Obama, Reid, Pelosi, etc. etc. service records?
MAKE them fight in the Front Lines, and watch PEACE blossom in winter.
Our Western media is in the tank for the war mongers who have created another false flag event to get the American people sacrifice their sons and daughters in another war. American governments don’t play well with others in the sandbox as the politicians simply love the campaign donations and perks the military-industrial complex gives them. If the American people refuse to fight to defend other countries’ borders and instead, defend their own southern border, America would be a much better place.

Perhaps it was a staged event by the west to make Russia look bad, just like the Syrian chemical weapons attack was made to look like the Syrian govt. was responsible but later investigation showed the anti-Syrian rebels were to blame. So, the rebels purpose was to raise international outrage against Syria by making it appear Syria used chemical weapons. That Syrian scenario sure looks a lot like the Malaysia air tragedy.
It is very sad for the families of these folks on the plane. Our Government is so screwed up, here in the USA from past and present administrations, especially with a Foreign President, it would not surprise me if it was not one of our supplied weapons to Ukraine that downed the plane. We will NEVER know the truth, any more than we know the truth of 9/11 sandy Hook shootings, etc. I receive my conspiracy training from the liars and do nothings in Washington. Get ALL OUR TROOPS out of the Mid East and bring them home.
We cannot save our own Country. How will we save others? Congress is a lame duck out to lunch bunch of losers. Senate is no better.
No one seems to be concerned with the real issue for our times, one that is mirrored in the Ukrainian Affair still roiling our national agendas.
The Ukraine is the southernmost bastion on the Eastern border of Europe in opposition to Islam. It was Russian for years because of this fact and Russians still sit there in defense of Western values. Russia had Crimea for this purpose. The Brits tried to take it away because they were playing with Islam even during the Crimean War, almost 200 years ago.Therein lies our real problem now since we are the child of Britain still, no matter what Washington declares.
The USA, in the last six decades, has been aiding and abetting the Islamic world, shoring up the Keepers of the Holy Relics of Islam by attacking the Shi-ite dissidents, who have held Islam in check for the last half a millenium. We even established a currency known as petrodollars to aid and abet the Saudis and their allies in this purpose, following the route established by the British in the mid nineteenth Century. We have gone to war to propel the Sunnis to the forefront despite their avowals to sink us all!
The West has no great group in place to effect any defense for it, its way of life. We have destroyed systematically all the organizations that did defend us from Islam and stand before history absolutely fractured, with no line of demarcation to be held.
There are forces in our world still trying to build coalitions to defend against Islam. The Asian countries have felt the terrible force of Islam more than the West. Look what has happened to India, Phillipines, Thailand and most of the islands in the Indian Ocean.
Even China and Japan have had problems, China seeking to solve them, following our directions, with the Ughurs, the Muslim minority still in command of the so called Silk Road now the Drug Road, has had major headaches with their terror activities ever since. China now joins with Russia since our advice was wrong!
If the West does not unite against Islam, its terrible agendas, we are finished.
We should be building an alliance for The West. We have never proposed it that way. Russia under Putin has… he even met with the Vatican, something that Obama has not done….for obvious reasons. Like that idiot commentator who said Obama gives him a thrill, Obama tells us the call to islamic prayer gives him many more!
Investors should look at the problem as it is since our way of life, the idea that Mankind (men, women and children) can better itself, will go the way all things good have gone…way away…when Islam takes the World! Islam reduces MAN to just another creature, Allah’s, with no special place in creation and lives, prospers because it elevates man above woman and children and embraces slavery for all who do not bow down before the masculine. Heady stuff for the men who want to run the whole world!
Those promoting War with Russia are serving Islam and if America falls for this crap from the NeoCons, we deserve everything that comes after!

War News for Saturday, July 19, 2014 – MH17 and NATO/Ukraine-Russia Confrontation
MH17 Downing
The anti-Russia hysteria over the downing of MH17 is reaching new levels, which is being fed to a large degree by Obama‛s statement of yesterday, and while I‛ll try to avoid the worst of it, even the “legitimate” news sources are permeated with it. So here goes:
The Malaysian government intends to involve itself deeply in the investigation. According to Itar-Tass. Basing itself on local media reports, the government is sending two C-130 aircraft to be available for the investigators and Prime Minister Najib Razak said that his country did not intend to draw conclusions based on suppositions about the crash, but would look for irrefutable evidence. The investigation must be based on firm proof and irrefutable facts, local media cite him as saying.
Numerous news reports are quoting the OSCE team at the crash site as saying that their access to part of the crash site is being blocked by a group of heavily armed rebels. “We will keep coming back tomorrow and the next day and the next day,” said OSCE spokesman Michael Bociurkiw. “Tomorrow will be a crunch day. There are a lot of experts from the Netherlands and Malaysia gathering in Kiev as well as relatives. The bodies are starting to bloat and decay. An expert team is clearly needed. There is a lot to be done in a short amount of time.” If it‛s really the case that rebels are blocking access to the site, this would be seem to be at odds with the statement, put out yesterday, by DPR prime minister Borodai, who said, yesterday, that “We‛re highly interested in an unbiased and full investigation and are prepared to give unrestricted access to the spot of the crash for experts of the CIS Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC).” Of course, what we don‛t know is what the security situation around the crash site actually is. As I noted, yesterday, Borodai had offered a ceasefire to facilitate access to the site, but Strelkov (who is otherwise now being held responsible for the shoot down according to some media headlines I‛ve seen)) said a ceasefire is not necessary
With regard to Obama‛s statement, yesterday, the Guardian says: “While Obama admitted that the US does not know exactly what happened, amid the ludicrous theories the circumstantial evidence did appear to point increasingly to an accidental attack by separatists who thought they were shooting at a Ukrainian military jet.”
Back in Vienna, the OSCE put out a statement on the crash site that, according to Andrei Kelin, Russia‛s OSCE representative, is relatively even-handed. “Perhaps, it is the first joint document on Ukraine which we have managed to pass since the start of the (Ukraine) crisis. For the first time ever, it contains a provision on the need to urgently create conditions for a long-term ceasefire, which should be quickly coordinated and observed by all the parties (in conflict),†Kelin stressed. Kelin added that the statement also stresses the necessity of creating the conditions for access to the crash for the teams that will be investigating.
While Obama practically declared he knew that Russia was responsible for the shootdown, members of Congress came out of closed-door briefings with administration officials on Thursday not sure of anything about it. According to Politico, after meeting with top intelligence officials, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee said they couldn’t draw any conclusions about whether the plane was shot down Thursday and, if so, who was responsible for it. Feinstein was asked, directly if there was any evidence that a surface-to-air missile took down MH17 and she said, “not at this time. This is just beginning.†Then she added, “It’s too soon to make any conclusion about the Malaysian Airlines crash right now. We hope to have more information in the next day or so. If evidence emerges that Russia was involved, that would obviously be extremely concerning.” Chambliss echoed Feinstein‛s uncertainty. Not surprisingly, McCain declared almost immediately that it was a missile and Russia was responsible.
The European Commission is equally uncertain. “The European Commission does not have the data of where the US got the information [that the plane was shot down by a missile] that was reproduced by mass media,” an EC representative told RIA Novosti, yesterday.
Pentagon spokesman Adm. John Kirby backed up Obama, yesterday, when he said that U.S. officials had “very strong evidence†that the Malaysia Airlines flight was struck by an SA-11 missile fired from a spot along the Russia-Ukraine border but that “who pulled the trigger†remained unclear. He noted that Russian military advisers and mercenaries have been helping the rebels on Ukrainian territory. The Post also notes in its coverage that there is video purporting to show an SA-11 launcher being removed back to Russia with two missiles missing from it. But the unanswered question on responsibility, here, as Kirby indicated, revolves around whether it was Russia directly, or rebel forces that they trained. All other possibilities have already been ruled out.
Questions as to why MH17 was routed the way it was are still floating out there, as well. Aviation blogger David Cenciotti dismisses any such questions by simply, in a post, yesterday, that MH17 was flying the usual, fuel-saving great circle route 1,000 feet above the closed airspace and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He points out that two other flights, an Air India flight and a Singapore Airlines flight were in the same region at the time. Russia Today, however, publishes maps from flighaware.com that show that MH17 on July 17, was routed considerably to the north of where the same flight had flown the day before. On July 16, MH 17 flew a more southerly route that took it over the northern part of the Sea of Azov. It looks like it skirted the southern edge of the Donetsk region before leaving Ukrainian airspace. The July 17 route had it passing to the north of the Sea of Azov before crossing into Russian airspace (Please make sure to zoom in if you look at these maps).
Why the change in routing? Malaysian Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said at a media conference on Friday. “There were no last minute instructions to change the flight path to a different route.” RT reports that no explanation has been given for the change, but suggests that the dispute between Russia and Ukraine over Crimean airspace (which the FAA has advised US airlines to avoid) might have played a role. “The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAN), a UN watchdog, considers the airspace over the region part of Ukraine’s national traffic control responsibility,” RT says. “Russia has contested this ever since the former Ukrainian region became part of Russia.” That might explain the routing over the Sea of Azov, which passes north of Crimea, the day before, but not the further north routing of July 17. If anyone has anymore on this, please feel free to forward it to me.
Underneath all of this, the war goes on, both in the diplomatic and military realms. At least 20 people were reported killed in Lugansk by heavy shelling, yesterday, and hundreds wounded. There was also heavy fighting reported to the north and west of Lugansk. Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey claimed, yesterday, that the regime’s forces had recaptured the southeastern section of the city and had surrounded the airport. In reporting this, the BBC adds that electricity and water have been cut off to most of the city, due to damage to infrastructure from the shelling.
NATO is not standing by, either. “Exercises in Lithuania and NATO’s other Eastern member-states will be expanded in response to Russian actions in Ukraine, NATO’s Joint Forces Headquarters officer Lieutenant Colonel Hans Houf said after his team inspected Lithuania’s military infrastructure in Vilnius Friday,” reports the Lithuania Tribune. ““There will be a continuous increased presence for training and exercise purposes not only in Lithuania but in the complete Eastern part of the Alliance, in fact. It’s only the beginning,” said Houf. “That’s an effort that we want to continue over time. It’s not only until the end of this year, for example, but we are already studying at the higher level within NATO to increase activity in the region in the coming years and fully integrate that into our annual training and exercise program.” All of this is attributed, of course, to the “new paradigm” brought about by Russia’s alleged meddling in Ukraine.
A final note on this: Finnish customs has reportedly intercepted an unlicensed shipment of missile parts heading to Ukraine. They are stgill investigating who the intended recipient of the parts was.
More news later, and there is plenty of it.

William F. has said my same thoughts about Russia !!!!
Thank’s WF
How about the effect the Americans had with their NGOs spending $5 billion to overthrow a democratically elected government of the Ukraine because they did not like the results. There are reasons to suspect that probably NSA and CIA and the rest of the alphabet groups were”stirring the pot” in Kiev.
So how has that worked out for you Mr. Obama? Would not it been better to let the Ukraine be neutral with no Euro, Nato OR Russia. Hmmmmm..just another sucess in foreign policy SCOREDDDDDDDDD by Mr. Obama….What you gonna do now? After all the Ukraine military has a history of shooting down passenger transports, correct?
Great not cjo! TE
That’s right. Keep emphasizing all the Palestinian casualties. Don’t ever mention the Hunan shield issue or the launching of hundreds of thousands of rockets on Israeli soil
America should control it’s urge to get involved heavily in this area. We should focus to fix our internal problems which are facing our seniors, homeless, veterans, national debt, infra structure improvement etc. To divert our attention to these events and making speeches to gain some talking points for upcoming elections will not solve our problems. God forbid by making harsh speeches and pushing for more and more sanctions, if we get more involved as in Iraq and Afghanistan, we shall be so much debt ridden that our children and future generation will have to lower their standard of living. We should let Europe do the heavy lifting in that area, as they are the ones who has to deal with the Ukraine.
We should focus on how to serve our people best and improve the living conditions for the millions. If we can, we should help the poor nations in fighting disease, illiteracy and poverty.
Inform yourself. You are going to need all the help you can get. Martin Weiss/Mike Larsen/etc are all on target. I believe this person is also.
