A recent surge in home sales softened in May across Broward and Palm Beach counties as the looming deadline for two federal tax credits didn’t lead to an expected burst of last-minute activity.
The setback could be the start of a sluggish housing climate for the rest of 2010, analysts say.
Broward reported 731 sales of existing homes last month, down 5 percent from April and 6 percent from a year ago, the Florida Realtors said Tuesday. The year-over-year decline was the first in Broward since June 2008.
Palm Beach County had 887 homes trade hands in May, off 3 percent from April, but up 20 percent from a year earlier. Sales declined nationally and in Florida compared with April.
