During the Cold War, Mad Magazine ran a popular cartoon strip called Spy vs. Spy, in which one of two competing spies blew himself up at the end, often the cause of his own undoing. There seems to be more of that going on now in the national surveillance state. It’s as though policies are the work of cartoon characters, and we are being undone at our own hand.
