Wall Street struggled to regain ground yesterday, swinging between slight gains and losses most of the day before closing in negative territory.
The Dow Jones industrial average, an index of 30 blue-chip stocks, lost 0.6 percent, or 37.27 points, to close at 6726.02. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index fell 0.6 percent, or 4.49 points, to 696.33, closing below 700 for the first time since 1996. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index inched down 0.1 percent, or 1.84 points, to 1321.01.
The losses added to Monday’s sell-off when the Dow closed below 7000 for the first time since 1997. Stocks rebounded during early trading as traders picked up cheap shares, but failed to sustain the rally as investors kept to the sidelines.
