Money and Markets: Investing Insights

The Stock/Oil Relationship … and a Non-Mystery

The Money and Markets Team | Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 7:30 am

Here’s a quick, executive summary of stories from this week, with a link to the full articles online.

Stocks?! Oil?! What to Do …

Martin D. Weiss reviews the team’s past and current oil-price forecasts — and how they relate to stocks. Then he drills down to see how cheaper energy impacts each of the ten major industry sectors in the market. Get details of a fascinating study by clicking here.

No Mystery Here …

The pileup of stocks in the first two weeks of 2015 furrowed a lot of brows but it should not be much of a mystery. Fund managers are selling stuff that had worked last year, like utilities and consumer discretionary, and turned their attention to groups that had been abandoned and could be bid up amid an improving economy, such as homebuilders and real estate. Chips and biotech are going along for the ride higher too because they are still cheap. Read more from Jon Markman by clicking here.

An Historic Bull Market Later This Year?

Larry Edelson puts the numbers together and sees some big things developing later this year. Click here to read more.

Ron Paul’s 2015 Outlook

Ron Paul has an impressive record when it comes to forecasting America’s economic outlook.

Few predictors have the track record of Ron Paul. Authoritative figures of the governing classes as august as Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke failed to see the biggest economic cataclysm since the Great Depression as it bore down on us. Nobody saw it coming, said Greenspan. But Ron Paul did. Charles Goyette looks at Paul’s outlook for this year. Click here to read more.

High Volatility = High Risk!

All of a sudden, we’re in a new market environment. Big moves, big volatility and big risks. What do to? Mike Larson takes a look. Click here to read more.

The Week’s Hot News

Money and Markets columnists take a look at key financial and political events around the globe after the market close. Here are the week’s highlights:

Corporate Earnings: Sinking in the Sludge?

Will falling oil prices take a bite out of U.S. corporate earnings? Mike Larson takes a look. Click here to read more.

A Major Trend Reversal?

The numbers are telling us something big is brewing. What is it? Mike crunches the numbers. Click here to read more.

Mega-Banks Keep Lawyers Fat & Happy

If the recent banking results are anything to go by, U.S. banks continue to pay out big money in legal fees and penalties. Mike takes a look to see what’s going on. Click here to read more.

What Wild Swiss Action Means for You!

In a move that utterly shocked traders from one end of the globe to the other, the Swiss National Bank abandoned its “peg” for the Swiss franc. It simultaneously said it would cut deposit rates to a whopping NEGATIVE 75 basis points from the previous negative-0.25 percent. Click here to read more from Mike on the subject.

Best wishes,

The Money and Markets Team

Hi All

The close following and expectations of movements in interest rates and the next and future meetings of the Federal Reserve are helping to destroy genuine growth from capital reserves. Cash reserves are waiting to be deployed on the next sure bet. This gives everyone a great deal of confidence that we all know where we are going, doesn’t it??? Whether it’s speculation on East / West gold reserve holdings and whose currency is backed with gold and whose is backed, just by the thin air of misplaced confidence makes for a promising future. I sense a mess is brewing and no one knows what is going to happen next, but there will be plenty around to take the credit for predicting it.
