Money and Markets: Investing Insights

TWENTY-TEN: A YEAR OF TRANSITION Key Investment Themes for 2010 and Beyond

Sharon A. Daniels | Monday, January 25, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Sharon Daniels
Sharon Daniels, President
Weiss Capital Management

Never before have we seen such a stark contrast between our economy here at home … bogged down by chronic unemployment and massive debts … and other markets and economies around the globe that appear to be fully recovered and enjoying robust growth.

This is not just a one-year phenomenon either. In the first decade of the new millennium, between the last day of 1999 and the last day of 2009, investors in the S&P 500 LOST about 24% of their money. By contrast, investors who bought the MSCI Emerging Markets Index during the same time period saw their money grow by 102%.

As we start the next decade, we see that the U.S. — and many mature economies in Europe too — REMAIN largely stalled in a slow-growth rut … getting by only thanks to government-sponsored life support … at a huge and growing cost to taxpayers.

Editor’s Note: Register now for a special, Web-only event to hear much more about Weiss Capital Management’s† independent forecasts for the year ahead.

Meanwhile, developing nations across the globe … and some mature economies that are closely linked with them … are STILL gaining upside momentum!

This is a tremendous divergence that will present opportunity and threats for investors and is almost certain to make 2010 a pivotal year for financial markets as the global economy transitions. At Weiss Capital Management, we expect this transition period to be uneven … a rising tide that can simply NOT lift all boats.

Our economy here in the U.S. grapples with tremendous debt and lackluster consumer confidence … and may face a slow growth future. As a result, U.S. markets could remain volatile for quite some time and a double-dip in our economy is a very real risk.

Meanwhile, many global markets — especially developing economies around the world — appear to be already fully recovered and enjoying robust growth again. What’s more, the global transition in 2010 and beyond should continue to favor many developing economies that have low debt and are rich in untapped growth potential.

The key question then is: What are the most promising investment themes for 2010 and beyond … and where will the best investment opportunities be found?

It’s important to remember that while there are particular risks to investing in global markets, as with any investment, there are also plenty of opportunities as we rapidly approach the tipping point of this global economic transition. I feel it’s absolutely vital we do everything we can to help prepare you and your investments for these dramatic changes.
