Weiss Ratings Issues Strongest and Weakest Lists for Life and Annuity Insurers

JUPITER, Florida (May 25, 2011) — Teachers Insurance & Annuity Association and State Farm Life Insurance Company are among the nation’s strongest life and annuity companies with assets of $25 billion and greater, according to the latest quarterly review by Weiss Ratings, the nation’s leading independent provider of bank, credit union and insurance company ratings. Meanwhile, Conseco Life Insurance Company and Wilton Reassurance Company are among the largest insurers considered weak based on December 31, 2010 data.

In reviewing 591 life and annuity insurers, Weiss found that 98, or 17%, are considered strong, meriting a Weiss Financial Strength Rating of B+ or higher. Meanwhile, 81, or 14%, of life and annuity insurers are considered weak, receiving a rating of D+ or lower.  Weiss Ratings assigns a financial strength rating based on its statistical analysis of each insurer’s capitalization, investment safety, profitability, liquidity, stability and other factors.
